Match reports

Tollesby Athletic 0 v Thirsk Falcons 6

The Under 11s started their campaign with a good 6-0 away win at Tollesby Athletic. James Spence opened the scoring with Hayden Wilson cleverly flicking home from a corner shortly after. Tollesby threw everything at Falcons after the break but resilient defending kept them at bay. Alfie Dickson added a third within ten minutes of the turn and the last ten minutes saw 'Man Of The Match' Arran Moore add two further goals and keeper-turned-striker Jordan Hollas complete the scoring. Despite having a lot of possession Tollesby couldn't turn percentages into goals but put up a fight for the full 60 minutes.

Arran ran through a brick wall for the team and George Warnes was rock-solid at the back.

The three-nil lead just after the break allowed us to relax and introduce our subs and Jack, Ted and Luke came on and everyone put in a good shift.

All in all, a great start and something to build on.

League Cup Round 1

Cumby 1 - Falcons 5

Playing 1st division opposition at the start of the season added to losing two key midfielders created the need to not only shuffle the pack but also the formation. Callum slotted into a midfield five with Thomas moving to the wing and Edward pushing up as a lone striker. Falcons had all the early possession and were soon Rewarded with the first goal as Alfie’s shot looped over a stranded Cumby keeper. Dylan quickly added a second with a deflected effort ending up in the Cumby net.

Callum made way for George Till at the start of the second half which saw Falcons pile on the pressure and again were given early reward with a sweetly struck shot from Thomas finding the top corner. Cumby scored a consolation goal to make it 1-3 but quickly found the pace of Edward too much to handle and he quickly added a further two goals. Every player on the day was fantastic with special mention to Hayden on the wing who tormented Cumby from the first whistle and Harris who was a rock in defence. Harris was awarded man of the match by both parents and coaches which was richly deserved.

Well done Falcons.

Thirsk Falcons 5 - Grangetown YCC 2

Falcons took on league leaders Grangetown at Newsham Road and came away with the points following a 5-2 win. It was all over after the first half as a pulsating 30 minutes saw Arran Moore score three and Hayden Wilson two. The visitors couldn't cope with Falcons passing and movement and the cream of the five goals was Arran's free kick that sailed into the top corner.

A five-up lead allowed the claret and blues to introduce Connor, Robert and Callum into the fray and Falcons continued to pile on more pressure and despite getting the ball into the box several times the Grangetown keeper kept them at bay.

Grangetown never gave up and two late goals made for McNally and Leaver gave them a lift but by then it was too late. Man of the match (voted by parents and coaches) for Falcons was Alfie Dickson who ran the midfield for 60 minutes.

League Cup Round 2

Leven 3 - Falcons 0

Falcons Under 11s crashed out of the league cup at Leven with a 3-0 loss. Falcons didn't really get their passing and movement together in a hotly contested, sometimes over physical game. Jordan Hollas was unlucky to see the first goal go in after palming a fierce shot and a penalty soon after the break put Leven in the driving seat with a late third settling the tie. Despite our best efforts we were beaten by a better team on the day. James Spence won the parents' man of the match and George Warnes the coaches vote.

Greatham 6 - Falcons 4

I phoned George Warnes' dad to get the half time scoreflash and we were 3-1 up and playing some very tidy football. Our passing and movement was fantastic and the Boro scout on the touchline was making frantic notes. Someone looked over his shoulder and spotted 'fantastico', 'molto bene' and 'just like watching Brasil!'

However at 4-1 up we threw all composure out of the window and were soon facing 4 evens with 10 minutes left. Two late goals settled things for Greatham and after the first half they must count that as a resounding fight back so fair play to them. They didn't give up and we maybe lost a little concentration so a lesson learned. All in all a great advert for the game and opitomising 'never say die' when it comes to football. I'm reminded of us playing Richmond away at U8 level and losing 3-0 at half time. We went at them in the second half and turned it around just like Greatham did.

That's football for you...

Falcons 4 - New Marske 1

Falcons bounced back from last weeks defeat with a good 4-1 win at home against table topping New Marske. Hayden Wilson opened the scoring cutting in from the wing and man-of-the-match Arran Moore added soon after with a blistering curl into the top corner. The New Marske keeper couldn't hold onto a fierce drive from George Till leaving Thomas Scott to mop up with a drive from close range making it 3-0 after 25 minutes. New Marske rattled the crossbar shortly before half time but Falcons stood firm.

After the turn New Marske had a little more posession but couldn't really forge a way through the Falcons defence where Jamie Hogg and Harris Vandenburg stopped eveything coming their way. Falcons created several chances but couldn't find the finishing touch and you wondered if we were ever going to score again. However, a fourth from Edward Lake midway through the second half settled the tie. Arran Hodgson came back with a late rally for New Marske but by then it was all over. Ric Fawcett was also outstanding for Falcons at left back.

What is especially pleasing is that goals are coming from all over the pitch and we don't have to rely on one marksman. The guys really work hard for each other and the passing and movement at times is breathtaking.

Falcons 1 - Winney Banks 4

A game where we just didn't get our usual passing and movement together which was a combination of our and their performance. After 10 mins it looked like it was going to be a cracking narrow score game as both sides had plenty of possession but we seemed to give the ball away too cheaply. Arran put us in front with a shot from the edge of the box that the keeper could only parry into the net. We had two more golden chances but either couldn't find a killer pass or squandered the chance. Winney Banks to their credit continually tested us and two quick goals put them in the driving seat at the turn.

The second half was more or less a repeat of the first - we had the ball in great positions but couldn't find the fluidity or accuracy of previous weeks. A free kick just outside the gave Arran the chance to net again but the keeper spilled and managed to hold onto the ball. Two more late goals for Winney Banks made you wonder how we lost by such a margin and left both coaches dumbfounded for the rest of the day - honestly.

Falcons 5 - Stokesley 6 County Cup

It was heartbreak time for Falcons against Stokesley in the Junior County Cup as the brave claret and blues fought back from 1-5 down to narrowly lose out by a last minute goal. Stokesley raced into an early lead and a four goal deficit looked a bridge too far against a team top of their league and who had only conceded twelve goals all season so far. James Spence scored the first for Falcons with a blistering drive the keeper could only parry into the goal. That made it 1-2 but then a calamitous 15 minutes made it 1-5 to Stokesley.

Hot shot Thomas Scott then scored an amazing four goals to make the tie evens with seconds to go and a last minute sloppy goal unfortunately shattered Falcons' dreams. This was a blistering cup tie - real end to end stuff played in good spirit and a joy to watch two teams really going for it. There were outstanding performances from keeper Jordan Hollas and four-goal hero Scotty.

Falcons 7 - Greatham B 1

Falcons secured another home win against Greatham B with a fine 7-1 performance on a cold, foggy morning at Newsham Road. The visitors started brightly with good passing and movement but Falcons' doggedness wore them down. James Spence opened his account cleverly chipping the stranded keeper after a goalmouth melee and in-form Thomas Scott rounded the keeper and fired home from an acute angle within ten minutes. Alfie Dickson added a well placed shot soon after and from then on the claret and blues were in the driving seat.

Scott and Spence added to their tally giving them a hat trick apiece and George Till and Edward Lake both came close to scoring. A spectacular overhead kick from a visitors corner gave Greatham B a consolation prize but Falcons stood firm to net the points and stay in the race for the top slot. Robert Lonsdale put in a great shift in the second half in midfield.

North Ormesby 1 - Falcons 8

The Under 11s notched a great away result at North Ormesby in difficult, windy conditions running out 8-1 winners. North Ormesby started brightly and had the better of the first exchanges and opened the scoring from a corner within a few minutes. However, Falcons settled into their rhythm and passing game with Alfie Dickson feeding the ball out to Edward Lake who stormed down the wing, cut in and fired straight through the keeper.

This inspired the claret and blues and within ten minutes they were three up with fine goals from strikers James Spence and Thomas Scott. By half time it was 5-1 to Falcons with Arran Moore adding to his tally following a Thomas Scott strike. Kicking with the wind in the second half James Spence and Thomas Scott both notched to make it a hat-trick apiece.

Alfie Dickson was outstanding in midfield and James Spence won parents man-of-the-match but in reality everyone in a Falcons shirt were outstanding and really worked as a team. In the last five minutes Goal Keeper Jordan Hollas came outfield as a striker and within seconds fired into the net only to be cruelly ruled offside. North Ormesby, to their credit, kept chasing the game but Falcons kept their composure and discipline to run out comfortable winners.

Falcons 7 - Ferryhill 3

A top of the table clash with 1st Ferry Hill verses 2nd Falcons. The morning did not start well with both goalkeepers unable to play due to illness. However, Arran stepped forward to take up the position between the sticks. Falcons had all the early play and James slotted home from close range to capitalise. Ferryhill responded with what looked like a dubious goal - was it over or not? The ref’s decision is final and the goal was given making it 1-1.

Falcons soon found themselves 1-3 down with ten minutes to go and just before half time Thomas cut in from the corner flag, took on two defenders and slotted home to make it 2-3 at half time and giving the coach something to work with. Soon after the break the team started playing as per the half time instruction, getting the ball out early to both Hayden and Edward on the wings who tormented the defenders at speed.

Thomas soon added his second, third and fourth to make it 5-3 and his own personal fourth hat-trick in four games. James notched his second and a solo effort from George Till finished Ferry Hill off 7-3. An outstanding performance from Arran in goal who was looked after by a strong defence and midfield. The forwards and wingers showed their class on the day scoring against a very strong unbeaten Ferry Hill Side. Credit to the visitors who never gave up for the 60 minutes - they gave a good account of themselves.

Everyone in a Falcons shirt deserved to be Man of the match as it was a 110% perfromance all over the pitch - the coaches gave every player a mark. Edward 'Lightning' Lake romped home with the parents vote.

"Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way. Oh, what fun it is to Falcons top the league on Christmas day."

Falcons 8 - North Ormesby 0

A well set up and organised North Ormseby side made life difficult for Falcons during the first half. North Ormseby had the very windy conditions on their side and kept the home side at bay, to finish the half 0-0.

With the wind on their side during the second half, Falcons soon found their feet and went three up early doors from Thomas with a typical poachers goal, and two solo efforts from Hayden. Arran soon put the home side four up with a great chip from outside the area that left the keeper stranded. James added to the score with a shot that almost took the roof of the net out. Hayden completed his hat-rick to make it six and Edward added a seventh with a side foot placement into the corner. Arran completed the scoring with the pick of the bunch - a well worked one two struck firmly from a tight angle into the roof of the net. A great result after a long break and difficult, blustery conditions.

A word for the North Ormesby team. Parents and coaches should be very proud of their guys for battling to the very end and playing with the right spirit, sporting atitiude and 100% committment. They never threw in the towel and battled for 60 mins.

Alfie picked up parents Man of the match for his awesome midfield performance and Jamie for organising the Thirsk defence and Hayden for a well taken hat-rick took the coaches award.

Very pleasing to see goals coming from all over the park and not limited to one or two individuals. This demonstrates how well we are playing as a team and working hard for each other. Well done guys!

Falcons 5 - Greatham A 2

On a bit of a nippy morning Falcons faced a Greatham side who in our last encounter had pulled back a three goal deficit so we knew this was going to be a tough one and we were right. Greatham looked a very solid outfit and didn't let us get into our rhythm and although we squadered two early chances it looked like it was going to be a narrow scoreline.

A long ball through found a Greatham stiker who despite the close attention of Harris managed to find the far corner with a clinical finish. That goal seemed to kick start Falcons into life and James soon found his shooting boots with a well placed shot from inside the area. Hayden dribbled the ball into the area and his powerful shot was just too much for the keeper. At 2-1 we started to play with a little more confidence but Greatham still harried and chased everything with a never say die attitude.

Soon after the turn James made it three following Edward raiding down the wing but Greatham responded as the ball fell to a striker from a corner. We ball watched and their player said 'thank you very much' placing a well aimed shot into the top corner. Once again this sparked Falcons into a more positive style of play and Edward keep making telling runs down the wing either forcing a save or crossing for the onrushing strikers. Falcons stoutly defended two free kicks from just outside the area with Jordan either getting good hands on the ball or watching it whistle wide. James wrapped up the points with a fine strike to make it a personal tally of four and a 5-2 scoreline.

Not the best football we have played this season but a gritty performance and we dug deep when we had to, so all in all a good day at the office and everyone can be proud of their effort and committment. Credit also to Greatham for giving it their all for the full 60 and never letting up with pressure.

Grangetown YCC 3 - Falcons 0

This was a distinctly under-par performance made worse by GYCC being well up for the game and the points. They harried and chased with the aim of getting the ball forward early. Falcons had a couple of early chances and George T was unlucky with a run into the area and shortly after a toe poked shot bounced back off the post. Unfortunately a speculative long daisy cutter sneaked inside our post and a looping deflected hook put the hosts in the driving seat at 2 up. For 50 of the 60 minutes we seemed to be content giving the ball away which ultimately put us under pressure.

At the turn maybe we could have pulled a goal back but it was backs to the wall stuff for most of the half with GYCC running at our flanks. Despite shuffling the pack we couldn't come up with any answers to the host's constant probing. Late on in the second half Arran and Callum had shots ping back off the bar and a free kick just outside the area - in Arran's danger zone - tested the keeper, who spilled only for Thomas to miss out by a whisker.

We only got our game together for short periods in either half and if those bar and post rattlers had gone in and we came away with a sneaky point we would have used all of our get-out-of-jail cards in one game so maybe we'll save them for later. The top four teams are all capable of beating each other in this division and it looks like it will go down to the wire.

Arran ran his socks off in midfield and Jordan's handling was spot on. Same we didn't get a consolation goal for our trip down the A19. Ferryhill next!

Ferryhill 5 - Falcons 8

Almost perfect conditions at Ferryhill with a big, flat pitch and sunshine even if it was a bit nippy around the lugs. Ferryhill showed why they had been table toppers and quickly found their rhthym getting the ball forward early to feet. Falcons didn't really cope with the early pressure and within a few minutes the ball was in the net from an OG - calamity! Within minutes though, a Ferryhill defender toe-poked the ball past his keeper as Hayden swept the balll in so it was evens. This didn't stop the hosts as they piled on the pressure and the claret and blues were at sixes and sevens, either giving the ball away cheaply or running into too many blue and white shirts and getting disposessed. A looping goal, a well-taken penalty and Falcons goalmouth mix up allowed the hosts to surge into a lead and although James replied with a sweet shot after some great wing play we looked dead and buried at half time.

After the turn we looked a completely different team and started to be more positive and direct and James netting again made it 4-3 only for the home keeper to launch a quick attack and within seconds we were 5-3 down. That only seemed to spur the Falcons on even more and wave after wave of either wing breaks or direct play down the middle turning their defenders brought dividends with Thomas cutting in to place past the keeper or James firing in from long range. Hayden added a second to his tally and James - another long range strike hit first time - and Arran following to tap home completed the scoring. Arran delighted the visiting supporters with a cartwheel and back flip making him a prime contender for the floor gymnastics at the summer Olympics.

The hosts were desperately unlucky not to get anything out of the game after dominating for long periods.

Robert who came in at the last minute filled in admirably in midfield and right back when Ted went off with a foot injury and deservedly got coaches MotM. James won the parents vote for his lethal finishing and attack play.
